The Screaming of the Innocent

Author: Unity Dow
The Screaming Of the innocentThe Screaming Of the innocentPublished in 2002 by Sphinx Publisher, The Screaming of the Innocent is a fictious crime novel by Botswana's first female high-court judge Unity Dow. Although Dow has since listed many accomplishments under her belt including her latest venture into politics her writing in this novel proves she is a gem to Botswana's academia. In this fiction work Dow explores the realities of "ritual murders" when 12 year old Neo goes missing in the tiny remote village of Gaphala.

When Neo goes missing in the year 1994 the police tell her parents that their investigations have brought them to conclude that the 12 year old was eaten by lions.

However the circumstances surrounding the case including the disappearance of evidence cause the villagers to be in a state of disbelief for years. Only for their suspicions to be confirmed when 5 years later a Tirelo Sechaba intern named Amantle finds the evidence that proves the young girl was murdered and locked away in a clinic storage facility. Amantle who has a reputation for calling out injustices then goes on a mission to help villagers and Mma-Neo to get justice for their lost child.

The Screaming of the Innocent is a heartbreaking novel that tells multiple stories. Not only the story of the fearless Amantle an overachieving girl in a world filled with patriarchy and ignorance - it also explores the power players in crimes that often leave police officers crippled with fear.

Unity Dow shows an extraordinary skill for writing. She is thorough in developing every character relevant to the novel although some characters are over explored due to their irrelevance.

Even though from the beginning of the book she eliminates the mystery of who murdered Neo by exploring her murderer's circumstances, she still leaves a large surprise for the reader at the end. I suggest readers obtain a copy of this intriguing read at Exclusive Books Botswana.
