The Thing Around Your Neck

Author: Chimamanda Ngozi Adiechie

The thing around your neckThe thing around your neckChimamanda continues to prove herself as one of a select group of emerging African writers. The Nigerian born 36 year old author of Purple Hibiscus is joining the league of African literary legends Chinua Achebe, Kwame Nkuruma, Wole Soyinka and Binyavanga Wainaina.

Chimamanda is definitely the most prominent African Writer of her time, having read The Thing Around Your Neck and it is easy to see why. The novel Thing Around Your Neck is a collection of short stories exploring Nigerian culture in different settings.

Unfortunately never having been to Nigeria it is impossible to say whether Nigeria is honestly represented in Chimamanda's stories but it is also impossible not to notice the similarities. The collection of stories range from modern to pre colonial tales.

A favourite from the collection is The Headstrong Historian a story that explores Nigerian culture in the pre colonial era and the sufferings it incurred when Nigeria became a colony; specifically between a mother and her son, a generational gap caused by his submission to Christianity.

The Thing Around Your Neck is set in different places including Lagos and the United States of America. It tells the stories of both women and men. It is realistic and is written in that manner of writing that belongs solely to Chimamanda and makes one believe that the naarative is real.
