Barclays Targets Unlocking SME's Potential

Barclays Bank Botswana has revealed that it will unlock the potential in the small and medium size enterprise sector in Botswana by introducing the Enterprise and Supply Chain Development(ESD) programme to enhance capacity building and strengthening the vertical and horizontal linkages between sector and corporate value chains.

“ESD as we call it will focus mainly on capacity building, link SME’s with the corporate value chain hence creating access to finance and also use the corporate value chain procurement strength to provide access to markets through the purchase order finance closed loop mode,” said Reinette Van Der Merwe, Managing Director of Barclays Bank Botswana.

She said, “It gives me pleasure that in this project that we are undertaking we engage to collaborate with us to make this project a success as developing the sector is a national agenda that involves all the parties.”

According to research nearly 90% of all registered businesses are SME’s and employ over 300,000 people both formally and informally.

Furthermore, it is reported that at least 90% of start-ups businesses fail in their first five years of operation owing to challenges like lack of financial management, record keeping, lack of proper management, poor product quality and lack of access to finance.

“We are in a unique position to serve SME’s by using our core skills and strategic positioning and influence. Being ingrained in the community we believe that as we grow as a business, those around us also grow and prosper. These include but are not limited to our colleagues and valued clients,” said Reinette van der Merwe, Barclays Bank of Botswana Managing Director.
