Veterinary Department calls for vaccination of pets

The Department of Veterinary Services has appealed to Tewane residents to
take good care of their pets and ensure they are in good health by
vaccinating them against diseases.

Speaking to this publication Mahalapye Chief Technical Officer Sefatlhego
Segoea advised that pets should be treated for rabies and other diseases to
ensure that their health and that of fellow human beings was not
compromised.

Sefatlhego stressed that rabies was an incurable disease popular with cats
and dogs, “Rabies is an incurable disease that persists in dogs and
cats,’’he said.

The Department which is taking their services to the people of Tewane
maintained that it was a routine practice to vaccinate animals against
diseases.

“Every year canines should be vaccinated to prevent this disease because it
is incurable but there is preventative treatment for it,’’said Segoea.

Segoea said that normally the rabies disease was transmitted from pets to
people through biting, which puts human beings at risk of contracting the disease. He said VETS target cats and dogs to curb the risk of the disease

passing to people.

The veterinary officer from Mahalapye outlined challenges faced by the
veterinary department in their quest to perform their duties, among them
was that of distance to service centres with in remote areas far from
services. Shortage of cars and human resource were also some of the
problems that hindered their department from carrying out their duties.

The Chief Technical Officer indicated that their department has the right
to kill animals if there is an outbreak and pet owners did not vaccinate
their pets. He was of the view that people should have healthy pets through
the vaccination programs availed to them.

Segoea’s last words to those who keep pets was that they should ensure good
care of their animals, “Protect the pets through preventative cures
provided to you and those you buy as pet owners’,’ concluded Segoea.
