Teachers Unions lock horns with state

Teachers under the auspices of the Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU) and Botswana teachers Union(BTU) filed an urgent application to the industrial court last week Wednesday (11/04/12) against DPSM and Ministry of Education (MOE) on the grounds of teachers being forced to take leave when schools are on vacation whereas before they were permitted to be on vacation without being expected to take leave.

Teachers celebrate anniversary of strike

4f8fbeb6-3150-4e24-83cd-22fca8a7fbd2Public servants taking part in anniversary rallyWednesday 18th April 2012 marks the 1st year anniversary of the renowned strike by teacher’s which shook the education system of Botswana. Even though not all their grievances were met, the strike managed to put to light the not so desirable holes in our country’s education system.

One of Botswana’s pillars is; ’To be an educated and informed nation’ by 2016 however the course pursuing to achieving this goal is subject to contestation by teachers and government officials. The strike arose due to the teacher’s wanting an increase in pay of 16% which the government initially than appeared to have a change of heart effecting a unilateral 3% increase. Teacher’s took the offer and have since gone back to work trying to make up for lost time as the strike disrupted the student’s welfare. Post-strike the effects of the strike are still prevalent today as there is still tension between the teachers and the employer which is the government.

Govt Plans involve parents to bolster results

Minister clutching at straws says union

The Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD) is unrolling 2 new initiatives aimed at encouraging parent and community involvement in transforming the quality of education in Botswana, and improving examination results nationwide. Already plans to establish a National Parent Teacher Association (NPTA) and an ‘Education Mentors’ programme are well underway.
