Un-serviced land in Francistown can produce over 20,000 residential plots

The Minister of Lands and Housing Prince Maele said he is indeed aware that an unserviced land in Francistown can produce more than 20,000 residential plots.

He was responding to a question asked by the Member of Parliament for Francistown West Ignitious Moswane Thursday.

"Nevertheless,I am also aware that the Francistown Development Plan of 1997 to 2021 has a proposal to generate close to 40,000 residential plots when fully developed. The approved layouts for Blocks 1 and 2 at Gerald Estate, yielded 6,402 residential plots while more than 29, 926 residential plots are expected to be generated out of the remaining 2,302 ha in the rest of the blocks in Gerald Estate," said Maele.

He said while he cannot say with any degree of certainty as to when the backlog will be eradicated since there are in the process of preparing NDP 11, his Ministry continues to explore several strategies to provide the requisite infrastructure.
Such strategies include:

a. Planned Land Servicing Programme;
b. Primary or bulk Land Servicing and allowing the
private sector to do internal reticulation; and
c. Full engagement of private sector in land servicing.

Moswaane also asked the Minister if he did not consider the Councils to partner with them in sourcing parastatals to join them on servicing land.

"In fact it is even more than that Honourable Member, because there is where we have requested the council to assist us in minimal servicing because in most cases they are there and they have graders,"he said.

"You will see when we unfold our ESP. in terms of forming the PPP of land servicing, we are obviously going to engage them because they are an important stakeholder in land servicing," he concluded.
