SADC Troika Passes The BUCK

A meeting of the SADC troika plus Council Chairperson to discuss the unfolding political situation in Zimbabwe has resolved to recommend the convening of an urgent extraordinary SADC Summit to deal with the drama surrounding the plot to remove Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe.

It also claimed to be committed to the African Union constitutive Act and the SADC democratic principles relating to the unconstitutional removal of democratically elected governments.

“SADC organ troika plus Council Chairperson Ministerial meeting called upon all stakeholders in Zimbabwe to settle the political challenges through peaceful means,” said Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, South African Minister of International relations and Co-operation for South Africa.

During the press conference an agitated independent MP from Zimbabwe Temba Mliswa warned against any SADC military intervention making it clear that what was happening in Zimbabwe was not a coup but a peaceful transition of power.  A domestic political challenge best dealt with internally amongst key stakeholders who were well equipped to resolve the crises.

The MP representing Norton constituency who is aligned to a faction within ZANU-PF led by Former Deputy President Joyce Mujuru, said the emerging transfer of power to wives by both South African President Jacob Zuma and Zimbabwean Robert Mugabe was completely unacceptable.

He warned against President Zuma using his influence to ‘bale’ out an old friend.

“Zimbabwe is not a province of South Africa. We are not Limpopo,” charged Mliswa. He said, “SADC is a toothless bulldog and it should not attempt to undermine the territorial sovereignty of Zimbabwe. We have some of the best ground forces in the region and Africa.”
