Obituary

Andrew D'bois Motsamai Formerly President of the Botswana Public Employees Union(BOPEU)

Motswaledi GBotswana Movement for Democracy(BMD) leader Gomolemo MotswalediIt's usually sad to write about the demise of a friend. A famous English writer Robert Bolt would have asked the kind question that is currently on our minds; what is it that Batswana can behold without awe? We are all beholden of what must have happened on that fateful Wednesday morning of 30th July 2014.

Some of my dear friends and indeed friends and comrades to our fallen hero Mr Gomolemo Motswaledi were calling and asking whether this could be another painting of the rigging of traffic accidents.

Again, this very great loss, reminds us as a people, that it is so hard to live and yet so easy to die. We are told that Comrade had in a spate of less than a year three road accidents, two of which he survived save for the third which robbed us of a true patriot. Simply put, comrade had too many mishaps for a man who never indulged in alcohol.

It's not always that easy, but the memorable moments we would always cherish, those of us who admired him as a person, was when like a principled Director and CEO, took his former organization the BDP to court because in his view, the party had lost focus on the coordinates the organization was supposed to chart. But then when push came to shove he chose to put the country first and refused to be submissive. He abandoned the perks, honor and glory that come with being the Secretary General of the party.

Three major events then followed after his initial demise "expulsion from the BDP", what in politics could be termed his political death. The BDP broke into two for the first time in its recorded history. Then followed the biggest and longest ever industrial action in southern Africa in 2011 safe for the recent platinum strike in RSA which essentially could be seen as a copycat of what the Botswana labour movement achieved. Then followed the third unfortunate event involving the rampant corruption that would improvised our beloved country. Something that comrade Gomolemo Motswaledi detested strongly.

He loved his country, and for that he qualifies to be honored as a "true patriot". He chose to live a simple life and die a humble man, but rich in spirit. In the few occasions that I have had to converse with him, I am without doubt that comrade Motswaledi would not have contested the Gaborone Central constituency had it not been of attenuated circumstances. Fame and pomposity was not part of his character. He leaves a vacuum too big to be filled, be it in politics, family and with friends. And as Bruce Lee would have put it, "the key to immortality is first living a life worth remembering" and as for my leader Comrade Gomolemo, he lived a life worth remembering.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
