Kalahari Challenge attracts riders from region

The P2m Gem Diamonds Kalahari Challenge will field a total of between 200-250 cyclists riding over 3 day from Botswana and countries in the SADC region it was revealed today.

“There will be about a 100 riders from Botswana. A good spread of riders from Gaborone and elsewhere,” revealed Seamus O’Neill, Gem Diamonds Kalahari Challenge Race Director.

The 240km race will include include 2400m of climbing over three days while the encounter route will be 175km and will involve a climb of 1300m.

The race has attracted local and international mountain bikers to the unspoilt bushveld of Southern Botswana. The race will start and finish at the Lion Park just South of the Capital, Gaborone.

Riders will be able to enjoy the miles and miles of bushveld singletrack, technical uphills, Kalahari "Mountains" and hardpack track uninterrupted. The riders will also be able to enjoy the luxury "Chill Zone" before resting in fully-equipped canvas tents with mattress, pillows, sheets and blankets.

The Gem Diamonds Kalahari Challenge takes place on the 9th to the 11th of June 2017 and a total of P250,000.00 in sponsorship prizes can be won. The race will start and finish at the Lion Park just South of the Capital, Gaborone and the winning team will pocket P20-25,000.00.

The Gem Diamonds Kalahari Challenge is a limited field, full-service race and received sponsorship of P275,000.00 from the rebranded Avani Gaborone Resort and Casino.

“We want to build it into a prestigious international event. It is regarded as one of top three cycle events in Africa outside of South Africa. We also want Gaborone to become a sporting hub for Botswana,” said Rian Van Rooyen, General Manager of Avani Gaborone Resort and Casino.

He said, “The event will bring much needed forex into Botswana.”
