On Saturday 19th July Batho Fashion Week held model its model casting in preparation for the Batho Fashion Week which will take place in September 2025.
This is the fourth edition of the show, which will be hosted in Gaborone for the second consecutive year. The show, which is sponsored by Pepsi, aims to bring promote the diversity of culture through fashion.
“It’s really to showcasing summer … local designers to shine on spotlight designers inspired by our culture, lifestyle values, all designs are around this,” said Raymond Geofrey, the show producer.
“It’s … identity as Batswana designers, sometimes Kalanga designers want to bring Kalanga designs, sometimes Bakgatla want to bring kgatla aesthetics,” he added.
He explained that sometimes people don’t know about local cultures or tribes within Botswana, this show presents a platform to celebrate and edify the public, citing a fashion designer who made a brilliant presentation showcasing the Hambushu culture of Botswana in a past show.
Geofrey believes that the fashion industry in Botswana can contribute to the diversification of the economy and celebration of Botswana abroad.
“They can bring in potential investors to add to the investor value chain, to take Botswana to London or Paris … if someone is in Paris they can take Botswana to Paris and show people [Batswana’s] culture and show what Batswana wear.”
