One of our immediate priorities upon taking office was to strengthen BOPEU’s bargaining structures to ensure that our members are effectively represented at the workplace.
“We have initiated comprehensive training programmes for shop stewards, focusing on negotiation skills, labour laws, conflict resolution, and effective communication. These interventions are designed to enhance the capacity of our representatives to handle workplace challenges with professionalism and to secure fair and just outcomes for our members,” said Martin Gabobake, President of the Botswana Public Employees Union (BOPEU).
He said, “The Union continues to uphold the highest standards of corporate governance. This fosters trust, reinforces integrity, and strengthens democratic participation within our structures.”
BOPEU recognises the importance of building financial sustainability and independence. To this end, we are exploring cooperative business ventures and investment partnerships that diversify the Union’s revenue base. These initiatives aim to enhance financial stability, support member welfare programmes, and ensure continuous improvement in service delivery to members. The Union’s financial growth strategy is designed to create long-term resilience and self-sufficiency.
In keeping with modern trends, BOPEU is implementing a digital transformation strategy to improve accessibility and efficiency in service delivery.
“The Union is investing in secure digital platforms that facilitate member engagement, data management, and transparent communication. Our digital initiatives are guided by strict adherence to data protection laws and ethical standards, ensuring that members’ information remains secure and confidential,” said Gabobake.
As an outcome of the Strategic Review held in August 2025, BOPEU has prioritised four strategic pillars that define our operational and developmental focus areas:
1. Advocacy and Lobbying – Strengthening BOPEU’s voice in national policy formulation and ensuring that the concerns of public employees are effectively represented through collaboration and coalition-building.
2. Capacity Building – Equipping BOPEU’s shop stewards and representatives with the skills and knowledge required for effective representation and leadership.
3. Good Governance – Promoting integrity, transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in all Union operations.
4. Sustainability – Ensuring the long-term stability of the Union through sound financial management, diversified income streams, and environmentally responsible practices.
Gabobake revealed that BOPEU will convene its Central Executive Committee (CEC) Meeting from 30th November to 4th December 2025 in Palapye. This meeting will review the Union’s performance since the start of the year and align our next steps with our strategic roadmap and member expectations.
“BOPEU reaffirms its unwavering commitment to advancing the rights and welfare of public employees. Our efforts are guided by the principles of fairness, integrity, and collective progress,” said Gabobake.
He said, “We will continue to build a strong, transparent, and sustainable organisation that serves as a beacon of unity and progress within Botswana’s labour movement.”
